In the 1st century A.D. the wealthy Roman families preferred to leave the sweltering summer heat of the big cities enjoying the windy breeze together with friends, business partners, and important political figures of the time.
When Pompeii was known as comerce-city, Herculaneum was sought-after as holiday-resort of very rich citizens of the Roman empire.
In Herculaneum where held Symposiums with special guests: famous scientists, poets, musician, writers and dancers were able to exhibit their talents while the guests sought out both business and personal relationships.
On August 24, 79 A.D. the volcano Vesuvius, which was situated near Herculaneum erupted at midday. Earthquakes had tormented the area just for years! Most of people escaped. Unfortunately sick or disabled inhabitants did not have this possibility.
In a few moments the city was inundated by lava and mud from the nearby eruption!
The visit takes approximately 3 hours. As we walk along the ancient harbor city on the original Roman streets we will visit the houses of Roman citizens, the Thermopolium or “take away”, the thermal bathes with fascinating mosaics, the Sports area and we will racognice a lot of details of the Roman Live. In some areas we can also visit underground passages!
